Cañeros In Yuma Recap

The Yuma Maple Leafs and Imperial County Ghost Riders All-Stars took on the visiting Cañeros de Los Mochis in an exhibition on Wednesday night at Ray Kroc Sports Complex in Yuma. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Cañeros took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Desert League All-Stars battled back to tie it 2-2 in the 2nd.

Second baseman Elijah Briseno knocked a double, scoring on an RBI single from designated hitter Austin Hoffman. Hoffman would steal seconnd before reaching third on a single from first baseman Abe Arias. Third baseman Kori Melo would pick up an RBI to tie the game.

Rich Ruff would take over the mound in the 3rd inning for starter Evander Ledward. Ledward would toss for two complete innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1. Ruff would also toss two complete innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 1.

The Cañeros would take a 3-2 lead in the third inning, holding it until the bottom of the seventh, when designated hitter Jordyn Van Atta knocked an RBI single to tie the game.

The Desert League squad looked solid, with relief pitchers Kyle Bugese, Jose Bautista, Aaron Hatch, Marty Anderson and Luciano Reynoso combining for 5 complete innings with 3 strikeouts, 4 hits, 2 walks and 0 runs.

The offense added eight hits, with third baseman Kori Melo leading the team with two.

The Somerton Caneros and Yuma Hammers All-Stars take on the Cañeros de Los Mochis tonight at 7pm for another exhibition game at Joe Munoz field in Somerton.

Exhibition Series Scheduled With Cañeros

The Desert League is pleased to announce an exhibition series has been scheduled with the Cañeros de Los Mochis of the Mexican Pacific League. The two-game series will be played at Desert League parks on October 5-6, 2016.CanerosLogo

Wednesday, October 5 will be hosted at the Ray Kroc Sports Complex in Yuma. The following night the setting moves to Joe Munoz Field in Somerton.

Players from all four league teams will make up two separate Desert League Select squads. With 20 games played, all Desert League players will be evaluated and selected by league personnel.

Desert League Affiliates With Mexican Club

The Desert League announced today a working affiliation with the Cañeros de Los Mochis of the Mexican Pacific League. Players will now move freely between the two clubs during their respective seasons.

CanerosLogoThe Cañeros have won the league championship twice and currently have a half dozen players from affiliated baseball here in the US. Founded in 1947, they play at Estadio Emilio Ibarra Almada in Sinaloa which holds nearly 11,000 fans.

The Desert League welcomes the cooperation with the team and looks to expand its affiliates prior to opening their season this September.
